VOLUNTEER 4 FOR SBTS

We are now recruiting volunteers to help us usher and tidy up outdoor locations during the available four (4) hours shifts at each of our performance - and yes you will get to see the show at the same time! 

Thanks, thanks and ever thanks for helping support our work to bring Shakespeare and other outdoor theatre to our community! We will also have a swanky pom-pom bedecked SBTS toque for ya...hey, you never know, it's a Newfoundland summer!

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: DIRECTORS FOR 2027 SEASON

Shakespeare by the Sea Festival is seeking proposals from directors at all stages in their careers who consider themselves to be based in Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • The successful candidates must be available for auditions in April 2027 and evening/weekend rehearsals beginning in early May.
  • The Festival will open in the first half of July 2027.
  • Mainstage directors will receive a contract fee of between $3500 and $4000. Equity directors are welcome to apply.
  • Proposals will be accepted as either 1-2 written pages or as a video/audio submission no longer than 5 minutes.

Please include, at a minimum, the following details:
  1. The title of the Shakespeare play you propose (Shakespeare-adjacent work may be considered, );
  2. Your concept for the piece, which may include the setting in terms of time or place, casting priorities, or other considerations. Please be specific wherever possible;
  3. The themes or plot points that you wish to highlight, and how you plan to do this;
  4.  Venue suggestions within the St. John's area, if this is an essential part of the concept - you may also indicate the "type" of venue you envision (park setting, hard-deck, etc)*;
  5. Why you are the right director for this specific play;
  6. Why this play is right for St. John’s audiences in 2027.

*Accessibility is a priority. Please consider physical access (including proximity to bus routes) if proposing a venue.

​All submissions will be acknowledged and reviewed by the three-member programming committee. Outcomes will be shared in the Fall of 2026 to align with planning schedules and grant submissions.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PLAYS FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES

Shakespeare by the Sea Festival is seeking submissions of plays for young audiences from playwrights at all stages in their careers who consider themselves to be based in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The ideal submission will be:
  • A play in one act, no less than 30 and no more than 60 minutes long;
  • Conceived for a non-traditional theatre venue – typically outdoors – with no reliance on lighting or projection effects and minimal set requirements.
  • Submissions of unproduced or previously-produced plays are welcome.

Shakespeare by the Sea Festival abides by the professional standards set by the Playwrights’ Guild of Canada with regards to royalties; the writer(s) of scripts programmed for production will receive contracts detailing minimum guarantees.
