Salon A/B, Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland

Are you curious about using direct address? Do you use it already? Either way, this workshop is for you. We often think of direct address as a tool for teaching text; this workshop is about using it to help teach physicality and blocking. After learning/reviewing some of the basic building blocks of direct address, we will get on our feet to explore how speaking directly to the audience can help actors and directors usefully and creatively engage with the specific physical space in which they are performing. We will experiment with a variety of audience configurations and will discuss how to incorporate this work into classrooms and rehearsals.

The nonprofit theatre model is failing—rigid, bureaucratic, and too often mirroring the corporate systems it was meant to disrupt. In this visionary session, Sam White, Emeritus Artistic and Executive Director of Shakespeare in Detroit, shares how a grassroots movement evolved into a thriving institution by prioritizing brilliance over compliance and rejecting recycled leadership.
Shakespeare in Detroit continues to grow, now seeking fresh leadership that understands sustainability is built through nurturing new voices—not perpetuating old systems. This session challenges us to reimagine board governance, dismantle outdated nonprofit hierarchies, and build models that center creativity, equity, and authentic community engagement. If theatre is to remain relevant, it must evolve. Join us as we explore how Shakespeare in Detroit’s story offers a working template for a future where nonprofit theatre isn’t just surviving, but leading a movement defined by innovation, inclusion, and fearless artistic entrepreneurship. |
